Tips for getting the most out of your treadmill

Whether it’s because the outside temperature doesn’t allow going out, because the only possible time to train is while a child is sleeping or simply “because”, running on a treadmill can be an option to consider.

There are some criteria that deserve attention before buying a treadmill. It is important to make the right choice. Here are my tips to help you get the most out of it.

The dimension

This may sound strange, but you need to make sure the machine actually fits where you want it to roll. I’ve seen (experienced) a horror story. Allowing 2′ to 3′ (60 cm to 1 m) on each side and in front of the treadmill, and at least 6′ (1.8 m) at the back will provide safety and usability. Don’t forget to take into account the height of the ceiling by making sure it is high enough to leave heads unharmed.

The engine

Most standard treadmills come with a 2.5 CHP motor. For higher intensity training, especially jogging or running, a slightly more powerful motor, at least 3.0 CHP, will serve much better.

Maximum incline and maximum speed

Most treadmills reach a speed of 10 to 12 mph (16 to 20 km/h) and an incline of up to 15%, which is sufficient for the runner. You have to make sure that the motor, by its power, and that the frame of the machine supports the promises in speed and incline of the treadmill … question of avoiding noise and breakages!

The weight supported

It is a good idea to check the manufacturer’s recommended maximum weight capacity of a treadmill before purchasing it. Typically, mid-range models have a capacity of around 250 lbs (112 kg) while high-end models can support up to 325 lbs (174 kg).

The size of the running surface (treadmill)

The length of a treadmill’s running belt should at least exceed the runner’s stride length. Standard treadmills are 55 in (140 cm). This size is suitable for the average-sized runner. A 60 in (152 cm) treadmill may be of interest to a tall runner (both in terms of size and performance). The width of the treadmill, on the other hand, should be at least 15 in (40 cm) for a minimum of comfort.

Accessories, including programs

Even if they are not necessary, accessories can become interesting for some runners. One thing is certain, you should not neglect the choice if they risk keeping a runner active for a long time and often!

For proper use

Having a treadmill is one thing. Here are a few tips.

Choose a minimum 1% incline for all rolling workouts. This is the best representation of a flat outdoor area.

Stand on supports as little as possible.

Use the programs offered by the treadmill as a game… and not as an absolute towards the marathon.

Supplement your cardiovascular activity with weight training.

Don’t forget to go and get some fresh air from time to time.

Have fun!
